A reminder to students who participated in the home reading club, all books need to be returned to the school ASAP! I will follow up with emails and phone calls for books not returned on Monday!

In math, we are working towards reaching the end of our fractions unit. Students are currently working on comparing fractions with different numerators or denominators. 

In social, we are looking at early settlement in Alberta. 

In science, we continue to talking about plants. Students will be bringing home their sprouted beans today, which can go in the dirt if you have a spot for them. 

In English, students are excited to be working on their story writing. They have created a character, a setting and a brainstorm of events. 

In Spanish we have completed our work on Joan Miro and are now talking abut the work of Antonio Gaudi. 

We have been working on our puberty health unit this week. We will complete this unit next week after wrapping up coping with puberty. Thanks for helping them with their "homework".

Friday, June 9th

Hopefully you are able to make it out to the Family Fiesta last night!! Huge shout out to the parent volunteers that helped get that organized!!

Back in the classroom we have beans waiting to germinate! Hopefully there will be some action by Monday. This is the start of our plant unit in Science. 

In social we are moving through the early settlement period in Alberta and we have specifically looked at Metis this week. 

In math we have been working on equivalent fractions. There have been some games added to google classroom for continued practice. 

In English we have been creating characters and will be moving on to setting next week to get set up for  story writing.

In Spanish we have been looking at the Spanish artist, Joan Miro. Students have been critiquing his art and learning about who he was. 

In gym we will be doing inline skating on June 13, 20, 23. 

Note to parents, we will be starting our human sexuality - puberty lessons on Monday, June 12th. 

Friday, June 2

Hello! As I'm sure you have heard by now, we had a very successful day at Heritage Park. Albeit a bit on the chilly side. The students represented the school very well and worked hard to gather information, while squeezing in some fun on the rides or watching a show.  Thanks again to our parent volunteers that made wonderful guides!!

In math we are working our way through fractions. Next week we will start on equivalent fractions.

In English we are working on elements of plot. Students will soon be working with a pre created character and creating an appropriate setting for them.

In science we will be wrapping up Gears on Monday and soon moving on to our Plants Unit!

In social we will debrief on our Heritage Park trip and move back to our work on the Fur Trade and Early Settlement in Alberta. 

In art we have completed a Joan Miro inspired snowman. We will continue to be the focus for our art time on Monday. 

In gym we have inline skating on Tuesday, June 6th and the rest of our gym will be spent outside.

Friday, May 26th

Reminders: There is no school on Monday, May 29th for a PD day. Don't forget to vote!

Our grade 4's start there inline skating class on Tuesday, 30th, in the afternoon. They are allowed to bring their own gear if they would like. All the gear is provided. Their personal gear must be approved by the instructor. This will run for the following four Tuesday's and a Friday class on the fourth week. 

We will be heading to Heritage Park four our grade 4 field trip on Thursday, June 1st.

This week:

We are working with fractions in math. Students are able to identify them, write them in numbers and in words from an image and we are currently looking at labeling fractions on a number line. Lots of fractions practice in google classroom. 

In English, we have moved on to elements of plot, which will lead into story writing. Student are looking forward to writing their own stories!

In science we have wrapped up simple machines and will be starting gears next week.

In Spanish we have started our last unit, which is artistas hispanas. Looking at famous Spanish artists. Our first one is Joan Miró. This work will tie into art class as well. Today students started to create a digital, Miró inspired snowman. 

Friday, May 19

 After a smokey week, we have made it to the weekend.

Students started their day finding fractions around the room and library. They are able to write a fraction and say it in words, in Spanish. We will continue to work on fractions next week. There is some practice work available in google classroom. We were working hard today to finish incomplete assignments in Spanish, English, math and art. Students should be done typing up their sensory paragraphs that go along with their season art. We also enjoyed going outside for gym today.

In math we are getting close to the end of our unit on perimeter and area. We will be moving on to fractions next, hopefully by the end of next week. As always, students are encouraged to keep practicing their multiplication tables. 

In English, students should be working on the good copy of their seasons sensory writing. They are taking feedback they received on their rough copies and need to make improvements to their typed good copy. This will be matched up with their season art. 

In science we are working away through simple machines, especially pulleys. This week students completed a reading comprehension about pulleys. 

In social they are continuing to learn about the Indigenous Peoples' of Alberta. 

In gym we have been spending time outside. We will use the gym if it is raining or too hot...! This week students had choice about what activity they wanted to do. This weeks choices were basketball, frisbee and soccer. 

Grade 4 Health Unit Important

The Grades 4 & 5 students will begin instruction in Health with topics related to Human Sexuality starting on or after June 12^th.  If you have not received a letter via email please find it in the blog below. The Grade 4 Alberta Education Physical Education and Wellness curriculum aims to help students make well informed, healthy choices and build skills that will support the wellbeing of self, others and the community. Sexuality education is a mandatory part of this curriculum and is contained in the following grade 4 Physical Education and Wellness learning outcome:

 Students explain how development and puberty are connected.

Heritage Park – Extra Volunteer Opportunity

 

Heritage Park – Extra Volunteer Opportunity

Dear Parent/Guardian: As you know, we are organizing an off-site activity to Heritage Park, which is located at 1900 Heritage Dr. SW, Calgary, AB T2V 2X3. The off-site activity will occur on Thursday, June 1, 9:30-3:00.   Since we sent out the information for this trip, we have received an overwhelming response from parents wanting to volunteer on this day with our classes. Although the 8 volunteer spots which were included with our admission have now been filled, we wanted to create opportunity for more parents to volunteer with us on the day of the trip. In order to accommodate this surplus of parent volunteers, a few conditions must be met by anyone signing up as an extra helper:        Anyone signing up must have a valid and up-to-date volunteer clearance, which has been sent to the school by May 24th, 2023. Adults without this volunteer clearance will not be able to participate in the student activities on the day of the trip.         Extra volunteers (outside of the 8 spots posted on Sign-up Genius) must cover their own admission to the park (this will not be covered or reimbursed by the school); your child’s admission is covered as part of the trip fees.        Extra volunteers must ensure their own transportation to and from Heritage Park on the day of the trip; you must also make your own parking arrangements while at the location.        All volunteers will be required to fill out a Consent and Acknowledgement of Risk form and return it to the Grade 4 team by May 29th, 2023 If you wish to sign up as one of our extra volunteers for this off-site activity please email Srta. Friday May 5th

 ¡¡Feliz cinco de mayo!!

The weeks seem to be cruising by...

Here is what we have been up to:

In math, we have wrapped up our work on long division. This was a challenge for most students, especially to start with. Knowing the basic multiplication tables will support students moving forward, in multiple areas. It's a great idea to keep practicing these.. and we won't stop reminding you about this practice!! Overall students were able to get the hang of the steps after plenty of practice. There will certainly be more long division in there math futures! As always, we encourage students to practice math regularly with sheets provided on google classroom, online or with math games. We have moved on to perimeter and area this week. It will be a short unit, working only with the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles. If you have any way for your student to practice real life measurements around the house, be sure to include them in the tasks!

In English, when we are not working on guided reading, we are trying to squeeze out some delightful, detailed and descriptive sensory paragraphs, one for each season, out of the students. We want them to write about their experience of each season without basic details of I went, I saw I touched... Their hard work is starting to pay off! This writing will tie in with the Jason Carter style art work they have been doing in art, about the seasons. 

In science, we are working though our simple machines unit. Students have been introduced to types of levers, rollers, pulleys, wheels and axles.

In social, we continue to look at the Indigenous People of Alberta.

Tuesday, April 18

In our class today, students completed the TIMSS exam. They were sent home with a survey for you to complete. Please follow the instructions on the page and return the form with your students back to me!

In other news we continue to work on our long division in math. In Spanish, students are working on food vocabulary and slowly getting closer to a final food project. Because of the exam, our day was a little different, as the test took up the whole morning. In the afternoon we had English guided reading, gymnastics and then Spanish class.

TIMMS - In class test

Reminder to families our class was the lucky winners of the random draw, we will be completing the exam in class on Tuesday, April 18th. You should have received a commutation about this from the school weeks ago. It is to see the level of math and science amount this age group. There is also a questionnaire that students will fill out. Therefore, there will be three sections each timed around 36 mins. Breaks in between will be provided. Students work on this test will have no impact on their school marks or assessment gathered this year.

We are working our way through the process of long division in math. Students are encouraged to practice at home and we will keep practicing at school. 

In English, we are working on our writing about spring and then summer, which is combined with an art pice of each season as well. This supports the students with their work on sensory writing. 

In science we are working on simple machines and have been talking about simple machines and mechanical advantage. 

In social students students have been learning many wonderful things about the Indigenous Peoples' of Alberta. Including how they celebrate, food clothing and ceremony. 

In gym we will continue with our movement unit for the next two weeks. Please make sure that students come to school dress appropriately. 

In Spanish we are working on vocabulary and descriptions related to food and our guided reading work.

Yearbook: Deadline to purchase a yearbook is Friday, April 28. The cost is $21. If you want to purchase additional books per student, please contact the office Dalhousie@cbe.ab.ca  It is an optional purchase and can be paid for through your MyCBE account.

 School and Parent Society Updates

With the change in weather conditions, please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather and any changes in weather.  Additionally, please send an extra change of clothes with your child to school to be kept in their backpack.  This should include a top, a bottom, change of socks and underwear.  Recess and lunch is a great opportunity for fun and play in the snow and slush, resulting in wet clothing. The office has a very limited supply of clothes.  Thank you for helping us keeping your child happy and dry.

FROM THE CLASSROOM:

As we roll into the final three months of school, we are keeping very busy with a variety of activities. 

In math, we have started working on long division. Students are encouraged to practice the steps with math practice at home. See google classroom. We will continue to practice at school with strategies, games and lessons!

In English, students are working on a project that combines sensory writing with listening to the different songs of Vivaldi, poetry and art. 

In Spanish, we continue to work on our guided reading and our unit on food. 

In social studies, we have started our unit on the Indigenous Peoples' of Alberta.  

In science, we have been working on some assignments around force, friction, motion and work. 

In gym we have wrapped up curling and will be starting gymnastics next week. Please see the pervious post regarding appropriate clothing and safety expectations. 

Movement Unit Dates and Info

Dear Dalhousie Families,

From April 11 – April 28, 2023,  students will be participating in a movement/Mission Impossible unit in physical education. Within all physical education units, students have opportunities to develop their individual skill level, share their accomplishments and experience the satisfaction of teamwork in a safe and non-threatening atmosphere.  In order for students to stay safe and have an enhanced learning experience, we ask that students follow the expectations listed below. We would like each student to review these guidelines with their parents as it will help them better understand the importance we place on safety.

 

Student Expectations:

• No jewelry, loose clothing, skirts or dresses should be worn during the unit

• Bare feet or gymnastics slippers can be worn on feet

• All long hair must be tied back or up

• Students will work independently or in small groups

• Students should work quietly as they practice movements as noise can distract others and may cause falls

• Children will only do what they are comfortable doing.  

• Pyramid building is not an approved activity

• Students must land on their seat on the crash mat

• Although some students have had private gymnastics training, no aerial stunts such as dive rolls, somersaults, flips, head springs or hand springs are allowed as these do not fit into the  curriculum.

 

Student safety is of the utmost importance at Dalhousie. Please review these expectations with your child.

As our yearbook is being close to being finalized, we wanted to clarify the consent to publish process.    The notification to parents and consent forms changed this year, so consent is not required for yearbooks.  Please see the School District Use of Personal Information document for further clarification.  If you do not want your child in the yearbook, please send an email to dalhousie@cbe.ab.ca by April 6, 2023, indicating that you do not want your child in the yearbook.   You do not need to do anything for your child to be included in the yearbook.  Information about how to order a yearbook will be forthcoming.

Friday, March 24

A huge thanks to parents and families to get their kiddos here for the concerts this week. We hope that you enjoyed the spectacular show! And a great job done to the students who sung, danced and played their little hearts out!

In English, we will continue with our sensory writing and guided reading after the break. 

In math we will start division. We have completed multiplication. Students should continue to work on their multiplication fact as this will support them with math moving forward and our work with division. 

In science we are learning about force, energy and friction. These are the intro concepts to our simple machines unit. 

In social we are wrapping up our work with fossils. 

In art we worked on a Coast Salish guided drawing of a sea otter. 

In Spanish we have started our unit on food and have been playing vocabulary games to refresh ourselves on the vocabulary. 

In gym we will have one more week of curling after the break as the concert rehearsals has us outside a few extra times this week.

We hope that everyone has a great break!! We will see you on the return to school, Monday, April 3rd!

Concert Reminder!

The students in Srta. Marasescu's class will be performing Wednesday, March 22. The school doors will be open at 6:00. Students should go to their classroom to get prepared before the show. The clothing expectation is a white shirt and black pants/leggings for girls. Srta. Sutherland's student perform on the night of the 23rd.

In math we will be wrapping up multiplication this week.
